A.k.a. Terai belt. A seasonally marshy zone of sandy, clayey alluvium and soils that lies between the floodplains of the major rivers that emerge from the Himalayas and the foot of the ranges themselves, The Terai strip receives more rainfall than the floodplains below during the monsoon season. The Terai also receives groundwater that percolates through soils and alluvium from higher altitudes. This geographic province is home to some of the tallest grasslands in the world, home of the magnificent Indian Rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis).
